The Riches are in the Niches

Hey, good morning! Rich here with Summit Life Group. Are you an independent life insurance agent, or are you looking to become one? Are you trying to figure out the best way to actually earn a living and make a good income selling life insurance as an independent agent? One thing I want to tell you is that the fastest way to become profitable, make a good living, and become a high-income earner in this space is to master a niche.

You’ve probably heard the saying, “The riches are in the niches,” and it’s very, very true. As an independent life insurance agent, there are actually a lot of different niches you can work in. One of the challenges I see with many independent agents is that they don’t commit to mastering a niche. When you look at people who earn a high income in this business, you’ll typically find that they have figured out and mastered some type of niche.

Now, this doesn’t mean you can’t eventually add another niche and learn something new, but trying to master everything at once is, in my opinion, a recipe for lack of success. When you find people who have had a lot of success, they’ve usually put their blinders on, figured out a niche, followed a process, and mastered it.

So, what happens when you master a niche? First, you’re learning your product—you’re mastering the product itself. Next, you’re mastering your customers. You actually understand who your customers are and, in many cases, their needs better than they do. This allows you to create clarity, help solve their problems, and lead them to the right solutions because you fully understand your customers within your niche.

You’re also able to match the right product with the right customer, and then you master the sales process for that particular niche. Sales processes can vary depending on the niche you’re working in. On top of that, you master the processes of the carriers you’re working with—this is especially important for telesales. You need to understand how to lead your prospects, and mastering these processes is critical for that.

Mastering a niche sounds simple, but it requires patience and discipline. When you start out and say, “I’m going to master this niche,” at some point, it will start to feel challenging. That’s just how it works, right? You’re going to face obstacles, and then you might think, “Oh, maybe I should try something else.” Shiny objects will come your way, and before you know it, you’re trying to follow too many processes and do too many things at once. In my experience, that’s a recipe for not getting traction and not earning a consistent income.

Once you’ve mastered something, you can always learn to master something else. But being patient, staying focused, and not getting distracted are key. There’s an old saying by Bruce Lee: “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” The point is, it takes discipline and focus to master something, and it’s the same when mastering a niche in life insurance.

So, if you’re just getting started, find a niche where you can master the processes, sales techniques, products, and your customers. Get really good at it, earn consistent income, and grow your career from there.
