The Truth about Insurance Sales

Hey, good morning! Rich here with Summit Life Group. I want to talk about the truth of insurance sales. You know, one thing I’ve noticed is that selling insurance is often portrayed as almost too good to be true “get rich quick” scheme. The reality is, selling insurance is an incredible career, and it’s something you can be very successful at. Yes, it’s true that people can make hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars. That may be your goal, and it is 100% achievable. This industry offers immense opportunities for growth and success.

However, it’s important to recognize that starting a career in insurance sales isn’t a quick fix for solving all the problems we might have created over the years. The truth is that selling insurance is a learning process, and the first year can be tough. You might see headlines or hear stories of new agents making $10,000 a week almost instantly, and while that can happen, it’s more the exception than the rule.

Typically, when you meet someone who’s had a successful career selling insurance, they didn’t just get their license six months ago. They’ve put in the time, learned the ropes, and continued to improve and grow in their career. The hype around our business can sometimes create false expectations.

Can you crush it in your first year and become a six-figure earner? Absolutely, you can. But if you don’t, that’s okay too. This industry is incredible and can support you whether you start part-time or jump in full-time.

In your first year, you’re going to face challenges. You’ll need to learn the process, understand the profession, and maybe even figure out the sales process itself. But if you stay with it, the truth is that you’ll set yourself up for a successful career. Your second year, your third year, your fourth year—that’s when you’ll really start to see the rewards. And it’s okay if it takes you three years to become a six-figure earner. I hope you achieve that in your first year, but if it takes longer, that’s perfectly fine.

The key is not to quit. If you want to know the truth about how to be successful, find a process or system, and connect with people you trust. Follow those who have already achieved success. It doesn’t matter what niche they’re in; successful people usually find someone who showed them the way, and they followed that path. That’s the best way to become profitable, but even then, your first year will likely be challenging. That’s the truth.

I wanted to share this because I see so much hype out there. Yes, we share success stories because we want to inspire and show what’s possible. We praise agents and highlight their achievements, but we also let people know that it’s okay to struggle in the beginning. That’s how we learn and get better. But don’t give up. I struggled in the beginning too, especially when learning how to sell virtually. But with support, we lifted each other up and kept pushing forward, getting a little better every day.

This is an incredible career. If you’re considering insurance sales, I want to encourage you—it doesn’t matter your background or past successes or failures, you can do this. But it requires consistency and a long-term vision. You can absolutely crush it in this industry.
